Rapida 130 - 162a
It would be rather presumptuous to
claim that we are the greatest. But
we are certainly the oldest. After all,
we have been manufacturing largeformat
sheetfed presses for over 80
years. Initially still for letterpress, but
then specialising in offset, once
planographic techniques came to the
fore. Generations of users have inspired
us to continue our developments for
large-format print. However strongly
the wind blew in our faces at times.
The market has proved that we were
always on the right track, because large
formats are today more firmly
established than ever before. The
annual growth rates speak for
themselves.

Large format with experience
Innovation paired with unbeatable
performance – what more need be said
to characterise the latest generation of
Rapida large-format presses? And that
for five format classes covering sheet
sizes up to 120 x 162 cm. They are not
only big, they are also really fast.
Printing speeds of 15,000 sheets/hr
have been standard for most models for
a number of years.
The KBA Rapida 130-162a presses also
lead the field when it comes to
automation. We leave no stone
unturned to promise you efficient
makeready and ultimate print quality:
From changing of the enormous plates
to inline quality control and pile
logistics. Fast job changeovers become
child's play, and you can concentrate
on satisfying your customers' most
individual wishes.
You still require a few centimetres
more? With the Rapida 185 and Rapida
205, KBA manufactures the largest
sheetfed offset presses in the world
today. And so you see, there is no need
to place restrictions on your sheet
format plans.
When all comes to all, it is your
flexibility which counts.
Polished detail
You don't become large format market
leader overnight. Mechanical
engineering at the highest level is our
foundation. The continuous gear train
of the KBA Rapida 130-162a presses is
not just a treat for the eye, it also
provides dependable drive for even the
longest press configurations. We have
no need for complicated differentials or
longitudinal shafts.
At the feeder, however, you will search
in vain for mechanical drive elements
of any kind. Four dedicated drive
motors with electronic control take care
of all the necessary motions, whether
press-synchronous transport of the
sheets or continuous, jerk-free lifting of
the pile. Substrate-related feeder
stoppages are reduced dramatically. And
you gain back valuable time.
That a Rapida press possesses doublesize
impression cylinders and transfer
drums is today basic printer knowledge.
We have been manufacturing our
presses according to this principle since
1965. Similarly proven over decades of
practical use are the gripper systems,
which adapt themselves automatically
to every conceivable substrate
thickness. Whether lightweight paper or
heavy board – there are no settings for
you to make. Neither manually nor at
the control console.
All these elements have one thing in
common: They are manufactured with
absolute precision to ensure perfect
print results. Our manufacturing
tolerances are comparable to those of
a hand-made luxury timepiece. That is
the only way to ensure the legendary
dot-sharp reproduction which is simply
expected today.
Our experience serving your success –
because you are the ones who matter.
Print quality on principle
Stable quality over long runs? Repeat
jobs? Documentation of print quality
for your customers? With the measuring
and control systems of the Rapida
large-format presses, you know you are
on the safe side. From simple density
measurement to dynamic colour control
– the full spectrum of modern
measuring technologies is placed at
your fingertips. And you can still decide
yourself, whether to accept the results
automatically or to adjust your settings
manually.
We are pleased to configure your KBA
Rapida 130-162a with precisely the
equipment you need to handle your
individual job structure. With KBA
DensiTronic PDF, for example. This scans
the printed sheet and compares it to a
PDF file. You can spot even the
slightest errors in texts or images
without looking. Register setting could
hardly be simpler than with the ACR
Control video camera. And KBA
QualiTronic is an unerring master of
continuous inline inspection. Sheet for
sheet – at full production speed. Also
with register control, if you wish.
Measuring and control systems may cost
a little more at first, but they actually
help to relieve your operating budget.
Through the reductions in waste alone,
an inline sheet inspection or colour
control system pays back its investment
within two years at the latest. Even in
small print companies. With an
automatic register system, it is usually
possible to forego an additional pull –
saving you an average 100 sheets with
every job.
Inline quality control delivers tangible
economic benefits – and is good for the
environment, too.
Fit for commercial print
Are there products which can be
printed in medium format, but not
in large format? Very few. In fact, it is
often worthwhile combining short runs
as a single large-format forme. Many
print companies are doing just that day
after day. With great success. With
Rapida large-format presses from KBA.
There is practically nothing which is
impossible with these presses, for
which maximum flexibility is a
trademark. They are available in a
simple four-colour version, but you
could equally configure a press line
with up to twelve units. And that for a
sheet format up to 120 x 162 cm. It
goes without saying that inline
finishing options can be added to suit
your specific needs. For example a
coating tower based on the proven
anilox technology. High-quality
brochures and business reports are lent
that perfect shine. With effects which
will capture the emotions of your
customers. Give your creativity free
rein.
On the KBA Rapida 130-162a presses,
manual makeready is a thing of the
past. With consistent console operation
and automatic presetting of the most
varied components, they justifiably
stand on a par with the ultra-modern
medium-format Rapidas. Just one
example: Plate changing – fully
automatic, if you so wish. In other
words, push-button plate changes in a
matter of minutes, irrespective of the
length of the press. With ACR Control,
register corrections are performed
before you know it, and the press is
back in production with a minimum of
delay. You have more printing towers
than you need for some jobs? Then
simply disengage the inking units from
the press drive, with a mouse-click at
the console. And forget the time you
used to spend applying roller oil and
washing down the unit.
With the large-format Rapidas, you will
also make a big impression in the
commercial arena
Unique in book production
You like books? We, too. And that is
why we have engineered special
large-format Rapidas geared to efficient
book production. What do they offer
which is not to be found elsewhere?
The key is the perfecting unit. Even
after decades of successful use, it
remains a subject of our further
improvement. And is thus constantly
abreast of the latest technological
advances. The mode conversion is
started at the press of a button on the
console. And barely a minute later, the
whole process is complete – fully
automatically.
If you print mainly books, then we can
especially recommend 4-over-4 largeformat
perfecting. Depending on the
format, up to 64 pages can be printed
on a single pass. The KBA Rapida 162a
is a real sensation in this respect. And
to help push things further, we have
added another 5 cm print length for the
eight- and ten-colour perfectors.
At the same time, you can arrange the
sheet layout with fewer print-free
corridors than in the past. The special
commercial delivery makes it possible.
And serves to boost your productivity:
With console-controlled positioning of
the suction rings and guide elements,
turbulence-free air above the pile and
modern solutions for precise powder
metering.
If you work with a relatively small
range of papers, then the optional
reel sheeter could be a big moneysaver.
Less expensive rolls of paper
are simply cut into sheets
immediately ahead of the feeder. Fast
and efficient.
But however you supply the paper:
Our large-format 4-over-4 perfectors
have an enormous appetite!
Packaging
is our speciality
The Rapidas are the world's
undisputed leaders in large-format
packaging printing. Why is that so? We
possess the necessary experience – and
have done for years. Packaging was
until recently still put down as a niche
market by some, but it is today rightly
a synonym for pinnacles of achievement
in terms of quality and technology. You
are ready to take up the challenges?
Then we are ready to support you. With
our KBA Rapida 130-162a presses, you
are ideally equipped.
It is hardly necessary to mention the
enormous substrate flexibility resulting
from our double-size impression
cylinders and transfer drums. That is
common knowledge. But what else do
we have to offer? Plinths to raise the
press, for example. The large-format
Rapida is able to grow by up to 630
mm. And you can simply sail through
the correspondingly higher piles.
That is still not all. Non-stop systems
at both feeder and delivery permit
smooth pile changes at full production
speed – without any manual invention,
if you choose. The KBA Rapida 130-162a presses thus integrate seamlessly
into your company's fully automatic
pile logistics set-up. Whether with or
without pallets.
You need a clearer overview? RFIDbased
pile identification is now reality.
And you know both where your
materials are, and how far your
production has progressed.
Also interesting: If you use KBA
QualiTronic for inline sheet inspection,
an ingenious technology marks the
defective sheets, enabling them to be
diverted out of the production process
fully automatically at the downstream
stages.
Fascinating solutions creating an
exciting package – in every sense of
the word.
Noble, noble...
Exquisite for a luxury pen, sensuous
for a seductive perfume, robust for
power tools, food-safe for breakfast
cereals. Packaging serves not only to
protect the product, it must also
encourage the consumer to buy. The
designers pull out all the stops. And
that means some real challenges for the
print industry.
Whether in commercial printing or
packaging, the print process would
today be unthinkable without inline
finishing. KBA has always been found
at the forefront of developments – with
convincing technologies and innovative
process solutions. Gloss and matt
effects, all-over and spot finishes,
single and multiple coating applications
with dispersion and/or UV varnishes –
there is almost no limit to the
possibilities. Some of the finishing
technologies were even developed by
KBA itself – enabling you to offer your
customers uniquely eye-catching
printed products.
For the large-format Rapidas, too, our
coating concept is based on the proven
combination of anilox roller and
chamber blade. With the same perfect
results as on sheets half the size.
Despite the larger dimensions, handling
is amazingly simple. Coating forme and
anilox roller changes are conveniently
automated. At the same time, the
sophisticated coating supply and
cleaning system ensures that no time is
wasted when switching between
different coatings. With no need for
extra manual cleaning. Even for a
switch between dispersion and UV
coating.
Discover the full creative diversity of
refined finishing!
No need for stress
Abigger press does not necessarily
mean that work becomes more
strenuous. You don't believe us? Then
simply try it for yourself – and put the
large-format Rapidas to the test.
Take plate changing, for example: You
can determine the degree of
automation yourself. We can offer you a
system where the plate must only be
placed onto the register pins by hand.
All the further process steps are started
from the control panel of the unit
concerned. You want more? With the
fully automatic version, the whole
change is controlled from the console.
You only have to bring the plates to
the press, where the cassettes can
already be loaded up while the previous
job is still running. The rest looks after
itself. Irrespective of the individual
press configuration, a plate change on
the KBA Rapida 130-162a is completed
within four minutes. Every time!
No-one really enjoys cleaning. But
there is no need to worry here – thanks
to a multi-function washing system
which puts everything you have seen
before in the shade. Depending on the
position of the washing beam, it
washes either the plates, the blankets
or the impression cylinders. Can you
get more efficient than that?
With the pre-impregnated cloth of the
Impact washing system, blanket and
roller washing can even run
simultaneously. The most appropriate
washing programme for the job in hand
is selected and started from the
console. Where else?
You see, at our ErgoTronic control
console, you can look forward to a
stress-free working day. It is your
convenient central operating point,
with functions and features to ease all
the chores of daily printing practice.
Imperative, especially in large formats:
Convincing solutions for simple
handling.
Digital networking
The world is going digital, but print
remains conventional.
Wrong! In print production, too, the
advance of digital processes is
unstoppable. Without JDF networking,
the automatic presetting functions of
the large-format Rapida presses would
be unthinkable. And without the
production management system
LogoTronic professional, there would be
no consistent printshop workflow. A
cloudy dream just a few years ago, but
today reality – transparency from order
receipt right through to dispatch.
You would like a more detailed view of
your production processes? Smooth the
task of job scheduling and optimisation
with KBA LogoTronic. One mouse-click
and PressWatch informs you on the
status of the current production, while
SpeedWatch documents all processrelevant
events from the KBA Rapida
130-162a. With this duo, you definitely
have everything under control. Postproduction
accounting practically takes
care of itself.
On top of that, with the facility for
Internet-based remote maintenance, we
are always on hand should you need
our assistance. In personal dialogue
with our specialists, you can clear up
your questions, obtain advice on
specific operating procedures and
settings, and even receive the latest
software updates. That not only saves
you time and money, it also spares your
nerves.
Worldwide communication and large
formats – Rapida presses show how it is
done.
Printing goes green
We all love nature and the
environment. Contributions to
safeguard the ecological balance are
thus a matter dear to our heart. What
exactly does that entail for us? The first
Rapida presses were already awarded
the eco-certificate “Emission-tested” in
2000. KBA had once again assumed the
pioneering role – as the first press
manufacturer to subject its products to
intensive testing in this respect.
The certificate confirms compliance
with a variety of branch-specific
emission thresholds. The defined limits
correspond at least to those laid down
in international standards, but are in
some categories considerably stricter.
The eco-certificate is thus recognised
as binding also outside Germany. All
the various Rapidas have been tested,
the large-format presses included: For
printing with conventional, hybrid and
UV inks, for dispersion and UV
coatings, and for paper and board.
Our responsibility for ecological
printing begins already with the
reduction of emissions during
manufacturing of the presses. If you
visit our factory, you will see this for
yourself!
Would you also like to do something for
the environment? Through careful
management of hazardous substances,
and by choosing ecologically
compatible process media, you can
make an equally valuable contribution
to resource protection and a
sustainable environment. Climateneutral
printing is not only an
investment in our common future, it
also represents added value for the
customers buying your products.
Business objectives and ecological
ideals – you can now choose both!
